Story of a Homeless Man

Yesterday we went to feed the homeless, we had a great turn out. We fixed a few more hot dogs than normal and still ran out. There seems to always be new faces, but most are familiar to us by now. We have gotten to know some quite well over the 2 years, anyway the ones who will talk to us more than saying thank you. There has been one man from the beginning that has been their most months, he even came to the picnic we had last month. He is a older black man, who always has a gray knit hat on, and walks with a cane. I noticed from the beginning that he acted like he was in charge, he's kinda loud and doesn't take stuff from the others. He cuts to the front of the line, like that's where he belongs. He also quotes scripture and talks about Jesus to us and others in the area, always grateful for what we bring and he thanks us. This Sunday as we were leaving, Karen & I were talking to him and I said we would see him next month. He said he wouldn't be here that he was going to Chicago, I jokedly said are you going up there for the winter to get colder? He said no that is his home and he is going back home. We said that is nice, he said it all started when he got a letter from the SS dept. and he went down there last Monday. They told him that he had been on the SSI and was suppose to get on his SS when he became a certain age. Well that was 4 yrs. ago, so they gave him a check for the different, he said it was over $900.00 a month for the past 4 years. He was tearing up and I think Karen & I were beginning too also. At first I thought they were wanting him to pay them back and he said no, they owe me, well by my calculations that's about $43,000! Can you imagine going from being homeless to getting a check like that. He said he is going home to Chicago and even though he's not dying he's going to get his funeral planned and paid for so it won't be a burden on his kin folk, get an apartment and he will be set. Karen & I just hugged him and told him how glad we were for his blessing. He said oh yes, God had blessed him. We told him to have a safe trip as he was leaving Monday and to make sure and find a church when he gets settled, he said he would.  God is so Awesome!
